Dexter is located along the Moosehead Trail (Route 7) in the southwestern portion of Penobscot County, about 30 miles northwest of Bangor. The Moosehead Trail takes travelers from I-95 in Newport north toward Dover-Foxcroft and the Moosehead Lake Region, but not without offering broad views of the recreational and commercial offerings of Dexter.
The town is home to 4,000 residents and up to 5,000 in the summer when seasonal residents and tourists return.
Lake Wassookeag, a 1,062 acre lake, named by the Penobscot Indians for “shining water,” borders the business district. The lake is a destination for fishermen in summer and winter. The lake is known for its supply of landlocked salmon, trout and togue. Most of the lake is navigable by boat, especially with the addition of a new boat launch to the Little Wassookeag side of the lake in 2000. The lake also provides the town’s water supply and is subject to several town ordinances to protect water quality.
Dexter also has a municipal 9-hole golf course and driving range, a public beach, camping and picnic areas and a small regional airport. Snowmobiling, fishing, watersports, and hunting are popular activities. Dexter is the original home and namesake of the world famous Dexter Shoe Company.
Recent changes in manufacturing have added technology to the many skills of Dexter’s workforce and created new opportunities for development in the community. The town is actively involved in economic development and promoting a new focus on the future for the progressive community.
